Growing up, my mom would always cut slits in plastic, six-pack drink binders. She said that if you didn't, birds and fish could get stuck in them, not be able to free themselves and die. Ever since then, I have always cut slits in each hole for the same reason.
We used to do that as kids too! I would now too, but we never have 6 pack drink binders around anymore :)
